Find a ProviderWhat is diverticulosis?
Diverticulosis is a condition in which tiny pouches inside the intestine bulge outside of the outer wall of the colon. Though the pockets, referred to as diverticula, might present themselves anywhere in the intestines, they are normally seen on the left portion of the abdomen, referred to as the sigmoid and descending colon. This is often a benign condition and does not usually cause pain. Diverticulosis and diverticulitis alike fall in the category of diverticular disease. Diverticulitis is the disease when these little pouches become infected or swollen. You have to have diverticulosis prior to having diverticulitis. In the event that you experience diverticulosis, it is vital for you to be seen by a GI specialist so you can avoid having diverticulitis. We welcome you to contact a Digestive Health Associates of Texas location near you today to request a consultation. Our digestive health providers are pleased to offer expert care for diverticulitis and diverticulosis in Dallas, TX.
What are the reasons for diverticulosis?
Researchers are not sure of the definite reason for diverticulosis. The widespread agreement is that the bulges emerge through the outside wall when irregular pressure in the intestine is exerted, due to colon spasms or straining to push out stool. There also appears to be a relationship with the family medical history, which indicates that genetic origin may place a person at an increased possibility of diverticular disease. Older age is the leading risk variable for diverticulosis. The condition can impact men and women alike. Starting in your 40s, the chance of developing diverticulosis rises approximately every decade. Roughly half of the population between 60 – 80 experience diverticulosis, and many people over 80 have the problem.
What are the symptoms of diverticulosis?
In general, there are no warning signs of diverticulosis. If a person were to notice evidence of diverticulosis, it may include:
- Gas
- Abdominal pain as well as cramps
- Trouble having a bowel movement
- Loose stools
If you get any alarming symptoms in your GI system such as those listed, get in touch with Digestive Health Associates of Texas to consult with a GI physician in your area.

I have gone to doctor Hakert for past twelve years I am so very thankful for the excellent care I received from doctor Hackett and his staff.
Dr Lyles takes time for any concerns you have and is an attentive listener. Great bedside manner.
Dr Sarles is an excellent physician…he is very thorough and thoughtful during your visit, as well as being friendly and personable.
This was my second visit with Dr. Patel. I have Diverticulosis and was having a bad attack of diverticulitis. I was treated in my local hospital’s ER & kept there to get a CT and a strong antibiotic via IV. I saw Dr. Patel for my follow up. He explained why this attack was different from the last one, 14 years ago. I was not taking care of myself-eating poorly, not exercising, not enough fiber in my diet, etc. All added up to classic reasons when combined lead to diverticulitis. He recommended the changes I needed to make to get better and stay healthy. He was very patient and knowledgeable. That being said, I hope I don’t have to see him before my next colonoscopy in a few years… ;-)
ONE OF A KIND DOCTOR!! Unbelievably amazing experience! Dr. Hasan is the NICEST doctor I have ever had an encounter with. I was very impressed with him and his office staff as well! Aaron is awesome and took amazing care of me before I sat with Dr. Hasan. He really looked at me and paid attention to what I had to say and responded with very educated answers to my question. I wasn’t rushed like you feel with most doctors and was extremely personable. I never felt more relaxed talking about these uncomfortable issues. I couldn’t be more happy with my experience and I recommend him to EVERYONE!!
